I was lucky that this immature Red-shouldered Hawk stayed put long enough for me to get to the house and grab my camera. The Red-shouldered Hawk is a small mammal, amphibian and reptile predator, characterized by very erect posture, a small beak, and short tail with broad bands. The immature bird typically has a speckled back.

Thanks to Gary Lindquist of the Tulare County Audubon Society for the identification and information on this beautiful bird.
